abstract The present invention relates to: a nematic liquid crystal composition which has a positive dielectric anisotropy (∆ε) and is useful as a liquid crystal display material; and a liquid crystal display element which uses the nematic liquid crystal composition.nA liquid crystal composition of the present invention has a liquid crystal phase of a wide temperature range, low viscosity, good solubility at low temperatures, high resistivity, high voltage holding ratio, stability with respect to heat, and stability with respect to light. Consequently, a liquid crystal display element which has excellent display quality and is not susceptible to display defects such as image burn-in and dropping marks can be provided with high yield by using this liquid crystal composition.nA liquid crystal display element using a liquid crystal composition of the present invention is useful by having a good balance between high-speed response and suppression of display defects, and is particularly useful as a liquid crystal display element for active matrix driving. This liquid crystal display element is applicable as a liquid crystal display element of VA mode, PSVA mode or TN mode.
