The invention relates to a method for detecting an oil spill in an aqueous medium based on a plurality of images of the surface of the aqueous medium, obtained using an infrared camera. The method comprises: analysing (11) an image from the plurality of images; verifying (12) if the image contains at least one region that could be identified as a spill; in the affirmative case, evaluating (13) if the point that represents a multidimensional vector of characteristics, associated with the region, is inside a reference zone defined in a multi-dimensional space, said reference zone being representative of multidimensional vectors of characteristics of regions corresponding to real spills; and, if it is determined that the point representing the multidimensional vector of characteristics is inside the multidimensional reference zone, generating (14) a spill warning signal. |
