abstract A coated product, comprising a substrate (10) and a coating layer (11), wherein said substrate (10) is in shape of a web, sheet or tray of fiber-based material such as paper or paperboard, and wherein said coating layer forma a barrier on the substrate and mainly contains biopolymer material cross-linked by a cross-linking agent, wherein the cross- linking agent is citric acid in a range of 14–50pph, and the biopolymer material is diesterified and hydrolyzed to an extent of less than 80%, preferably less than 50% and most preferred less than 30%.
