The present invention addresses the problem of providing an organic electroluminescence element offering an excellent element lifetime and light-emitting efficiency, and also excellent chromaticity stability in a high-temperature high-humidity environment and with a white light-emitting balance. This organic electroluminescence element having, between a positive electrode and a negative electrode, a hole transport layer, a light-emitting layer containing a host compound and a phosphorescent compound, a hole-blocking layer, and an electron transport layer is characterized in that a relationship illustrated by formula (I) is satisfied, where L 1 (eV) is the absolute value of the energy level of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the light-emitting layer, L 2 (eV) is the absolute value of the energy level of the LUMO of the hole-blocking layer, and L 3 (eV) is the absolute value of the energy level of the LUMO of the electron transport layer, and in that the hole-blocking layer contains a compound represented by general formula (1). Formula (I): L 1 < L 2 ≤ 1.50 eV < L 3 |
