The present invention relates to [1] a method of producing 1-(2-t-butyl cyclohexyloxy)-2-butanol involving a step for hydrogenating 1-(2-t-butyl phenyl oxy)-2-butanol under the conditions of hydrogen pressure 1-5 MPa and in the presence of (A) a palladium catalyst supported by activated carbon derived from peat and (B) a metal catalyst containing one or more elements selected from ruthenium, rhodium, platinum and nickel, and further relates to [2] a perfume composition containing 1-(2-t-butyl cyclohexyloxy)-2-butanol obtained by said method. By means of the present invention, because the residual amounts of reaction intermediates are reduced, high yield rates of highly pure 1-(2-t-butyl cyclohexyloxy)-2-butanol can be obtained which, as a perfume material, has a strong amber or wood fragrance and excellent fragrance tone. |
