abstract A smoking article (1, 100, 200, 300) comprises a plurality of elements,including a front-plug (2, 102, 202, 302) and an aerosol-forming substrate (7), assembled in contact with a cigarette paper (5) to form a rod (15). The front-plug (2, 102, 202, 302) is located upstream from the aerosol-forming substrate (7). In use, a heating element (8) is inserted into the smoking article (1, 100, 200, 300) and the aerosol-forming substrate (7) is heated to generate an aerosol. When the heating element (8) is subsequently withdrawn from the smoking article (1, 100, 200, 300), the front-plug (2, 102, 202, 302) acts to retain the aerosol-forming substrate (7) within the rod (15).
