abstract A method and apparatus for treating a wet or moist lignocellulosic material including maintaining a moisture content in the material which is in a range of above the Xfsp value of the lignocellulosic fibres and 0.1 kg water/kg dry below the Xfsp value, where Xfsp is the fibre saturation point, and increasing the temperature of the wet or moist lignocellulosic material to a level that natural polymers in the lignocellulosic material soften which results in improved properties of the lignocellulosic material.
