abstract The purpose of the present invention is to provide an optical compensation film that is adapted for a vertically aligned liquid crystal cell having a large ∆nd, and whereby oblique-angle contrast and/or hue can be improved, and to provide a liquid crystal display device including the optical compensation film. This optical compensation film contains a cellulose ester, and satisfies the expressions (1) through (4) below simultaneously when the in-plane retardations measured at 23°C and 55% RH at measurement wavelengths of 450 nm, 550 nm, or 650 nm are R0(450), R0(550), and R0(650), respectively, and the thickness-direction retardations are Rth(450), Rth(550), and Rth(650), respectively. (1): 0.7 < R0(450)/R0(650) < Rth(450)/Rth(650) < 2; (2): R0(450)/R0(650) < 1.0; (3): 40 nm < R0(550) < 80 nm; (4): 100 nm < Rth(550) < 260 nm
