abstract Provided are a rubber composition for tire cord coating, breaker edge strip, breaker cushion or cord-adjoining strip that can improve handling stability, fuel economy, durability, riding comfort and adhesiveness in a balanced manner, and a pneumatic tire using same. The invention relates to a rubber composition for tire cord coating, breaker edge strip, breaker cushion or cord-adjoining strip comprising isoprene rubber, phenol resin and/or alkyl phenol resin, partial hexamethoxymethylol melamine condensate and/or partial hexamethylol melamine pentamethyl ether condensate with a 60 mass% or higher isoprene rubber content in 100 mass% of the rubber components, wherein with respect to 100 parts by mass of the rubber components: the total content of phenol resin and alkyl phenol resin is 2 - 3.9 parts by mass; the total content of partial hexamethoxymethylol melamine condensate and partial hexamethylol melamine pentamethyl ether condensate is 0.5 - 5 parts by mass; and the silica content is 15 parts by mass or less.
