abstract In a method for generating a physical layer (PHY) data unit for transmission via a communication channel, the data unit is generated to include a first long training field when the data unit is to be transmitted in a normal mode. The data unit is generated to include a second long training field when the data unit is to be transmitted in a low bandwidth mode. The first training field and the second training field are configured such that a receiving device can auto-detect whether the data unit corresponds to the low bandwidth mode or the normal mode.
