abstract The invention is directed to a method for maintaining structure, homeostasis, repairing or treating media thinning of one or more blood vessels as well as treating atherosclerosis or ischaemic heart disease. The method comprises contacting the blood vessel with LYVE-1+ macrophages either directly or by local administration of M-CSF to recruit endogenous LYVE-1 macrophages to the blood vessel, wherein the blood vessel's media comprises smooth muscle cells.
