abstract The invention entitled "Method for the selective production of N-methyl-para-anisidine" relates to chemical technology processes and, more specifically, to methods for the catalytic alkylation of aromatic amines and nitro compounds. The invention concerns a method for producing N-methyl-para-anisidine (N-methyl-para-methoxyaniline; N-methyl-para-aminoanisole) from para-anisidine (para-aminoanisole; para-methoxyaniline) or para-nitroanisole (1-methoxy-4-nitrobenzene) and methanol in the presence or absence of hydrogen over a heterogeneous catalyst. The proposed method makes it possible to exploit existing industrial plants used for producing aniline and N-methylaniline. The aim of the invention is to make it possible to produce N-methyl-para-anisidine with a purity of not less than 98% and a high yield, thus permitting cost-effective, multi-tonne manufacture.
