abstract A honeycomb structure (100) provided with: a central section (6) having a cylindrical honeycomb structure section (4) with porous partitions (1) and an outer circumferential wall (3) that demarcate multiple cells (2), and a pair of electrodes (21) disposed on the side surface (5) of the honeycomb structure section (4); and an outer circumferential section (36) disposed on the outer circumference of the central section (6). The electric resistivity of the honeycomb structure section (4) is 1-200 Ωcm. Each of the pair of electrodes (21) is formed in a band shape that extends in the direction that the cells (2) extend. In a cross-section that is orthogonal to the direction in which the cells (2) extend, one electrode (21) is disposed on the side opposite the other electrode (21) with the center of the honeycomb structure section (4) therebetween. The outer circumferential section (36) has porous partitions (31) and an outer circumferential wall (33) that demarcate multiple cells (32). The volumetric heat capacity of the outer circumferential section (36) is smaller than the volumetric heat capacity of the central section (6). Provided is a honeycomb structure, which is a catalyst support as well as functioning as a heater when voltage is applied, and which has excellent thermal shock resistance.
