A method of obtaining data from a patient for the purpose of predicting treatment failure and/or clinical deterioration and/or re-admission, includes measuring neural respiratory drive by obtaining a measure of the second intercostal space parasternal electromyogram, repeating the measurement, either continuously or at regular time intervals, and comparing the measured values. A monitoring device (10) including a signal input (20), a processing unit (30), and an output unit (50) is operable to receive and process the signals obtained from the patient. |
