The invention relates to a method for transferring an alkyl, alkenyl or alkenyl group to a low-molecular weight compound (small molecule) having a nucleophilic centre, the method comprising the step of contacting the compound with an S-Adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM)-dependent methyltransferase in the presence of an alkylated sulfonium salt of general formula (I) or an alkylated sulfonium salt of general formula (II), wherein X Θ is an organic or inorganic anion and R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are respectively and independently of one another a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, alkenyl and alkinyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms. |
