abstract The invention relates to a device for determining the growth of a plant or a crop by determining height, comprising a movably mounted distance-measuring instrument which can be passed, at a predetermined height, over a plant or crop, wherein the device comprises an evaluation unit, which evaluates the measured values of the distance-measuring instrument in terms of both height and number to determine a growth point, and the measured values for determining the height of the plant or crop are always measured at around the same time of day and are subtracted by at least 5% and at most 40% from the maximum value of the height in accordance with a plant species or plant genus to be measured.
