abstract The present invention provides a process for the preparation of nevirapine, which comprises reaction of 2-chloro-N-(2-chloro-4-methyl-3-pyridinyl)-3-pyridine carboxamide with cyclopropyl amine in presence of a suitable reagent such as carbonates, bicarbonates, acetates of alkali metals and lanthanum oxide, followed by cyclization of the resultant product.
