abstract A method of generating an electrode material comprising rare earth metal fluoride nanoparticles embedded in a carbon nanostructured matrix is provided. The method includes forming a dispersion or a solution comprising a carbon precursor and rare earth metal fluoride nanoparticles. The method further includes drying the dispersion or the solution to form a mixture comprising the carbon precursor and the rare earth metal fluoride nanoparticles. The mixture is thermally decomposed to form the carbon nanostructured matrix comprising the rare earth metal fluoride nanoparticles. An electrode material comprising rare earth metal fluoride nanoparticles embedded in a carbon nanostructured matrix is also provided. An electrode for an electrochemical cell, in particular, a cathode for a lithium battery comprising an electrode material according to various aspects of the invention is also provided.
