abstract Embodiments of the present invention relate to the field of communications, and provide a MIMO mode configuration method and a communication device that enhance system functions by reducing the channel interference on users in a neighboring cell transmitting using a configured MIMO mode on a same channel. The method comprises: the cluster traffic volume and interference are calculated for each pre-configured MIMO mode combination in a cluster, the actual MIMO mode for each user in the cluster is set to a pre-configured MIMO mode for the user from a pre-configured MIMO mode combination that corresponds to the largest traffic volume or the smallest interference in the cluster. Embodiments of the present invention is applicable to configuring the MIMO mode for users in a cell.
