abstract The present invention relates to a composition for activating a GABA A benzodiazepine receptor containing phloroglucinol, phlorotannin or a brown algae extract as an active ingredient. The brown algae extract has an affinity to a GABA A benzodiazepine receptor, and safety can be obtained without causing side effects because a material obtained from a natural substance is used. Phloroglucinol, phlorotannin or a brown algae extract can be utilized in a pharmaceutical composition for anti-anxiety, anti-convulsion, sedation and insomnia treatment or a food composition for anxiety alleviation, convulsion reduction, and sleep induction and improvement as an active ingredient.
