abstract The invention relates to a device (1) for determining bone states, in particular bone density and/or bone elasticity, comprising at least one ultrasonic transmitter (2) and at least one ultrasonic receiver (3), which are arranged on the bone (7) to be examined, and a loading apparatus (6) for accommodating the bone (7) and/or a body containing the bone (7), wherein the loading apparatus (6) can load the bone to be examined and relieve the load on the bone (7) to be examined in alternation, and wherein the loading apparatus (6), the ultrasonic transmitter (2), and/or the ultrasonic receiver (3) are connected indirectly or directly to a common control apparatus (5). The invention further relates to a method for operating said device (1), comprising at least the following steps: carrying out a sound wave propagation-time measurement with regard to at least one sound wave frequency by means of the ultrasonic transmitter (2) and the ultrasonic receiver (3); and simultaneously loading the bone and relieving the load on the bone (7) in alternation while carrying out the sound wave propagation-time measurement.
