Provided is a surface-coated cutting tool which combines wear resistance with chipping resistance to a high degree. This surface-coated cutting tool is characterized by comprising a base and a coating film formed on the base, the coating film comprising at least one titanium carbonitride layer, and is further characterized in that the titanium carbonitride layer has texture coefficients TC (hkl), of which the orientation-index TC (220) is the maximum, and that when the indentation hardness of a hardness standard piece is expressed by Hs and the indentation hardness of the titanium carbonitride layer is expressed by Ht, then the average of the values of relative hardness Ht/Hs obtained through a plurality of measurements is 3 or more and the ratio of the difference between the maximum relative hardness Ht max /Hs and the minimum relative hardness Ht min /Hs of the titanium carbonitride layer to the relative hardness Ht/Hs is 0.5 or less. |
