Disclosed are: a layered structure that has a substrate and a hole-injection and/or hole-transport layer that contains an aromatic compound that has, in a side chain, at least one species of group that has a cationic center; an electronic device that contains said layered structure; an aromatic compound that has, in a hydrocarbon side chain, at least one species of group that has a cationic center; an aromatic compound that has an elimination group in a hydrocarbon side chain; and a method in which said aromatic compound that has an elimination group in a hydrocarbon side chain is reacted with a specific nitrogen compound, phosphorus compound, sulfur compound, or a combination of two or more such compounds, thereby converting said aromatic compound into an onium salt thereof, said method being a method for manufacturing the abovementioned aromatic compound having, in a hydrocarbon side chain, at least one species of group that has a cationic center. As an electronic-device material—in particular a hole-transport and/or hole-injection material—said aromatic compound produces a higher current density at a given voltage. |
