Disclosed is an organic electroluminescent element that is highly heat-resistant and highly durable. Said organic electroluminescent element has the following on a substrate: a pair of electrodes, comprising an anode and a cathode; and one or more organic layers, including a light-emitting layer, between said electrodes. Said light-emitting layer contains at least one phosphorescent light-emitting material, and at least one of the one or more organic layers contains a compound represented by general formula (1), in which X represents an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom, R 101 through R 107 each independently represent a hydrogen atom or a substituent, R 108 represents a substituent, a represents an integer from 0 to 4, n represents an integer greater than or equal to 1, and La represents an aromatic hydrocarbon group that has a valence of n and may contain a substituent. There is at least one cyano group in general formula (1). |
