abstract Provided is a compound having a good skin lightening effect and excellent safety and stability, and an external agent for skin to which this compound is added. The compound is a 4-alkylresorcinol derivative represented by general formula (1) or a salt thereof. (In the formula, R 1 is a branched or cyclic C 3-7 alkyl group or a linear C 2-5 alkyl group, R 2 and R 3 are each independently a hydrogen atom or group represented by -P(O)(OR 4 )(OR 5 ) and at least one of R 2 and R 3 is a group represented by -P(O)(OR 4 )(OR 5 ), and R 4 and R 5 are each independently a hydrogen atom or linear or branched C 2-5 alkyl group.)
