A High Intensity Discharge lamp and method of making same having a ceramic arc tube; (50) defining a discharge chamber with opposite ends of the tube each receiving an ! electrode (52, 54) extending into the discharge chamber. A thermal shield (70, 74) extendsf from each opposite end of the arc tube and defines a radial gap (GR) with the tube. The thermal shields define an axial gap (X3) therebetween, and in some embodiments extend from end plugs (72, 76) in the arc tube; and, in another embodiment are formed integrally within arc tube halfsections which are joined and fused together. |
