abstract A bilirubin measuring apparatus includes a sample holding portion for holding at least a sample to be analyzed, a light source for directing light toward the sample holding portion, and means for determining a concentration of bilirubin in the sample based on an amount which the light is refracted while passing through the sample holding portion when at least the sample is held at the sample holding portion. Also, a method of measuring bilirubin in a sample includes holding at least the sample at a sample holding position, directing light toward the sample holding position so that the light will pass through the sample, and determining a concentration of bilirubin in the sample based on an amount which the light is refracted while passing through the sample holding position.
