titleOfInvention Method and device for stabilizing the cornea
abstract In order to stabilize the cornea in cases of keratoconus, a cross-linking agent has hitherto been applied and the entire cornea irradiated for a relatively long time with UV light, which is unpleasant for the patient and can lead to tissue damage. The invention aims to allow the cornea to be stabilized with fewer side effects. In particular, greater stability and a shorter treatment time are to be permitted. For this purpose, the cornea is locally irradiated successively at different sites in such a way that, at the irradiated sites, collagen fibres are directly or indirectly cross- linked. The collagen fibres are thus advantageously cross-linked in a spatially resolved manner. It is thus no longer necessary for the entire eye to be irradiated with tissue-damaging UV light, and areas of weak structure can be locally stabilized selectively. The corneal sites are preferably irradiated in such a way that the collagen fibres are each ionized by photo absorption of several photons, which each have an energy below an ionizing energy of a given molecule. After a short treatment time, strong covalent bonds occur directly between the collagen fibres. It is possible to entirely dispense with the use of crosslinking agents.
