abstract Disclosed is a method for producing a honeycomb structure and a honeycomb structure such that a honeycomb structure, in which an entire coating layer has uniform strength and the surface strength of the coating layer is high, can be easily achieved. The method for producing this honeycomb structure is characterized by the production of a honeycomb structure such that a ceramic block, in which columnar honeycomb sintered bodies having a plurality of cells separated by cell walls and arranged in a longitudinal direction are bundled through an adhesive layer, is provided with a coating layer surrounding that ceramic block. The method for producing the honeycomb structure is further characterized by comprising a molding step for extrusion molding of honeycomb compacts in which cell walls are formed on the peripheral parts, a sintering step that forms honeycomb sintered bodies by sintering these honeycomb compacts, a fixing step in which a plurality of honeycomb sintered bodies are affixed in a mold form, a filling step in which a sealing material paste is filled into the spaces between that mold form and the honeycomb sintered bodies and the spaces between the honeycomb sintered bodies, and a drying step in which that sealing material paste is dried and hardened and the adhesive layer and coating layer are formed. This sealing material paste contains inorganic particles and/or inorganic fibers, and the mold form and/or inside surface of the mold form is an airflow part having air permeability. The drying step is characterized by at least part of the airflow part being brought into contact with the sealing material paste and the sealing material paste being dried and hardened.
