abstract A compound represented by general formula (I), a salt of the compound, or a solvate or a hydrate of the compound or the salt, which has a different mechanism of action from those of statin-type medicinal agents and is effective for the prevention or treatment of arteriosclerosis. In the formula, R 1 represents an aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic acyloxy group, or a group represented by formula -O-CH(R 7 )-R 8 , wherein R 7 represents a lower alkoxy group and R 8 represents an aryl group; and R 2 represents a carboxyl group, a lower alkoxycarbonyl group, an arylmethylcarbamoyl group, or a -CH 2 -acyloxy group and R 3 represents an aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic acyloxy group, wherein at least one of R 4 and R 3 represents a group other than an acetoxy group or R 2 and R 3 together form a group represented by formula -O-CH(R 5 )-O-, wherein R 5 represents an aryl group.
