abstract The present invention accordingly provides a process for preparing aldehydes of the formula (I) in which one, two or all three radicals of the group R 1 , R 3 and R 5 denote hydroxyl, and the radical or radicals of the group R 1 , R 3 and R 5 that do not denote hydroxyl are, independently of one another, hydrogen, C 1 -C 8 alkyl or C 6 -C 14 aryl, and R 2 and R 4 independently of one another are hydrogen, C 1 -C 8 alkyl, C 1 -C 8 alkoxy or C 6 -C 14 aryl, the process being characterized in that an aldehyde of the formula (II) in which one, two or all three radicals of the group R' 1 , R' 3 and R' 5 denote C 1 -C 8 alkoxy, and the radical or radicals of the group R' 1 , R' 3 and R' 5 that do not denote C 1 -C 8 alkoxy are, independently of one another, hydrogen, C 1 -C 8 alkyl or C 6 -C 14 aryl, and R 2 and R 4 have the definitions indicated under formula (I), is reacted at elevated temperature and elevated pressure in the presence of (C 1 -C 4 alkyl) 2 -amine, and the reaction product of the formula (I) is subsequently isolated.
