abstract The present invention provides a method of automatically reducing a volume level of an audio signal provided to a user. An audio signal is received, the audio signal is provided to the and a current hearing threshold for the user based on one or more psychophysical or electrophysiological responses of the user to the audio signal provided to the user is determined. A temporary threshold shift (TTS) based on the current hearing threshold is determined. If the TTS is above the specified TTS, the volume level of the audio signal provided to the user is automatically reduced.
