The present invention relates to superoxide dismutase genes and gene products, involved in the drug tolerance and/or persister cell formation of microbial biofilms. More specifically, the present invention provides methods for screening candidate materials or agents which modulate, preferentially inhibit the production, expression or activity of said superoxide dismutase enzymes, to overcome reduced antibiotic susceptibility of microbial, particularly fungal biofilms and/or to inhibit persister cell formation and to sensitize said microbial or fungal biofilms to antimicrobial agents, particularly ROS inducing antimycotics. |
