abstract A cutting edge structure for a cutting tool, comprising a base material (6) and a cutting edge member (7) which is supported by the base material (6) and has higher hardness than the base material (6). The base material (6) has a first surface (6a) and a second surface (6b) which intersects the first surface (6a). The cutting edge member (7) comprises a coating (7) which is formed by welding either a material which constitutes an electric discharge electrode (8) or a reaction substance of the electric discharge electrode (8) to the second surface (6b), the electric discharge electrode (8) being molded from powder of metal or powder of a compound of metal or powder of ceramics or powder of a mixture of the abovementioned types of powder, the welding being performed by the energy of electric discharge generated between the second surface (6b) and the electric discharge electrode (8). The base material (6) and the cutting edge member (7) are formed so that the tip of the coating (7) protrudes to the tip side of the cutting edge from the ridge at which the first surface (6a) and the second surface (6b) intersect each other and so that the cutting edge angle (θ) is in the range from 10° to 20°, inclusive.
