abstract The present invention describes new microspheres which comprise: (i) a layer or core of a polyanion, such as alginate; (ii) a polycation coating, such as poly-L-lysine in contact with the outer part of the polyanion layer or core; and (iii) a silver coating in contact with the outer part of the polycation coating. The silver is initially found as silver (0) and can oxidize to silver (+1) to be active against infectious processes. The invention also describes pharmaceutical compositions comprising these microspheres, particularly, compositions for use in the treatment and/or prophylaxis of infectious processes.
