The sensor material is formed of a swellable, sol-gel derived composition having a porous matrix and a property modifier intermixed with at least a portion of the porous matrix. The sensor material is swellable in the presence of the sorbate to be detected and has a first property value when unswollen and a second, different, property value when swollen.
