titleOfInvention Conversion of asbestos cement into a solid amorphous silica-based material
abstract The present invention relates to a method for treating asbestos cement, in which the asbestos cement is reacted with an acid other than hydrofluoric acid, within an aqueous solvent medium, at a temperature T of at least 125 °C and at a pressure P higher than 0.2 MPa, with the following conditions: the mole ratio of the amount of acid implemented in step (E1), relative to the total amount of asbestos and cement contained in the asbestos cement to be treated, is higher than 1; and the volume of aqueous solvent, indicated by Vs, which is implemented in step (E1), is less than the ratio n SiO2 /[SiO 2 ]max T'P , where: - n SiO2 is the total amount of silica contained in the asbestos cement; and - [SiO 2 ] max n P T indicates the solubility of SiO 2 in the solvent S with the temperature and pressure conditions (T, P) of step (E1), namely the saturated silica concentration in the solvent S under said conditions of temperature and pressure, by means of which the asbestos is eliminated by acid dissolution and a solid material containing amorphous silica is simultaneously formed.
