Disclosed is an organic electroluminescent element, particularly a phosphorescent organic electroluminescent element, which has high efficiency and high durability and which is produced using an organic compound having excellent properties including excellent hole injection/transport performance, a high ability of confining a triplet exciton, an electron-stopping ability, high stability when formed into a thin film, and high luminous efficiency. Specifically disclosed is an organic electroluminescent (EL) element comprising a pair of electrodes and an organic layer that is composed of multiple layers including a light-emitting layer comprising a phosphorescent light-emitting material and a hole-transport layer and is intercalated between the electrodes. The organic EL elements is characterized in that a compound having a carbazole ring structure represented by general formula (1) is used as a constituent material of the hole-transport layer. |
