abstract Provided is a process for preparing easily and efficiently an intermediate compound for use in the synthesis of a gadolinium complex which has a substituent capable of improving retention in blood or organ specificity. Also provided is an intermediate for the synthesis which has been prepared by the process. A process for the preparation of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid derivatives (I) [wherein R 1 to R 5 are each independently C 1-6 alkyl], characterized by including: a step of reacting a diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid pentaester with a halogenated allyl compound; a step of removing the residual part of the halogenated allyl compound; and a step of reacting the reaction product, which has been formed by the reaction of the diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid pentaester with the halogenated allyl compound, with a base in a solvent.
