abstract The present invention relates to a novel process for the production of a compound of formula (1), wherein n = 1 to 10 and m = 1 to 10, in linear two-step synthesis, wherein an N-maleimido acid NHS ester of formula (6), wherein n = 1 to 10, occurs as an intermediate. The invention further provides processes for the purification of the product and of the intermediate. In particular, the invention provides a process for the production and purification of succinimidyl-6-[β-maleimidopropionamido]hexanoate (SMPH). SMPH is a compound of formula (1), wherein m = 5 and n = 2.
