abstract The present disclosure relates to determining a patient's disease state based at least in part on obtaining or determining certain underlying characteristics, such as vasotone, venous compliance, or ability of the vascular system to drain venous blood, of the patient's vascular system. The characteristics may be obtained by analyzing changes to a patient signal, such as the overall signal change, the rate of change, the shape of the change, changes in signal energy, or changes in the baseline and/or the amplitude of the signal, and/or the time period(s) over which the signal changes, that are caused by inducing a load on the vascular system. In some embodiments, the signal changes may be analyzed by transforming the signal using, for example, a continuous wavelet transform. The patient's health status or disease state may be determined using the one or more vascular system characteristics that influenced the signal change.
