Disclosed is an efficient production method for alkyl benzenes with high added value, and a catalyst used in same, wherein said production method suppresses a decrease in activity accompanying carbon deposition on the catalyst resulting from a decomposition reaction of 1.5-cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and also suppresses excessive decomposition and excessive nuclear hydrogenation. The production method for alkyl benzenes combines a feedstock hydrocarbon oil containing under 20 vol% of alkyl benzenes, under 30 vol% of bicyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and at least 25 vol% of 1.5-cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, with a hydrocracking catalyst including a solid acid with a maximum Brønsted acid strength of at least 110 kJ/mol, and no more than 140 kJ/mol. |
