A process for producing an aluminum oxycarbide composition, the process attaining a high Al 4 O 4 C yield, a low Al 4 C 3 content, and high productivity; and an aluminum oxycarbide composition. A mixture substantially comprising a carbonaceous raw material having an average particle diameter of 0.5 mm or smaller and an alumina-based raw material having an average particle diameter of 350 µm or smaller, the molar ratio of the carbonaceous raw material to the alumina-based raw material, C/Al 2 O 3 , being in the range of 0.8-2.0, is evenly mixed so that deviations of the proportion of the C ingredient are within ±10%. This mixture is melted in an arc furnace at 1,850ºC or higher. |
