The culturing of a microorganism and the production of a substance by means of a microorganism are achieved industrially with high efficiency utilizing, as a carbon source, a long-chain fatty acid that has not been always utilized effectively in industries until now. A microorganism is cultured in the presence of a carbon source comprising either one of the following compositions (1) and (2): (1) a fatty acid composition comprising at least two fatty acids selected from the group consisting of lauric acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid and oleic acid; and (2) a mixed composition comprising at least one fatty acid selected from the group consisting of lauric acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid and oleic acid and an oil-and-fat, wherein the content of the fatty acid is 10% by weight or more. |
