Disclosed is a coating composition which has high stain-proof performance and improved adhesion to a hydrophobic surface such as a plastic material. Also disclosed is a coating method. The coating composition comprises an aqueous medium and hydrophobic resin particles dispersed in the aqueous medium, and additionally comprises hydrophilic inorganic microparticles and an anti-oxidant agent comprising at least one member selected from a peroxide, perchloric acid, a chloric acid salt, persulfuric acid, perphosphoric acid and a periodic acid salt. The coating method comprises the steps of: providing a first preparation comprising an aqueous medium, hydrophilic inorganic microparticles and hydrophobic resin particles, wherein the hydrophilic inorganic microparticles and the hydrophobic resin particles are contained at a ratio of 70:30 to 95:5 by mass in the aqueous medium; providing a second preparation prepared by adding an anti-oxidant agent comprising at least one member selected from a peroxide, perchloric acid, a chloric acid salt, persulfuric acid, perphosphoric acid and a periodic acid salt to the first preparation; applying the second preparation on a member to be coated; and drying the second preparation applied on the member. |
