The controller device includes a cartridge connector (104) for establishing an electrical connection with the interfacing connector, memory (250, 1344), and a processor (240, 1340) in communication with the cartridge connector and the controller device memory. The processor executes a controller application that writes a controller device identifier to the memory of the connected cartridge, writes a cartridge identifier to the memory of the controller device, and permits usage on the controller device of content associated with the cartridge.
