The optical display device comprises a region of nanostructures operable as an optically active media (4), such that said nanostructures are responsive to input electromagnetic radiation, e.g. a UV source (2) with a backlight diffuser (1), to emit output electromagnetic radiation, and an arrangement of electrodes (3,5) being configured to create an external electric field to said region of nanostructures, said region of nanostructures and said arrangement of electrodes defining together a pixel arrangement of said display devices; said external electric field affecting said region of nanostructures to selectively modulate emission of said output electromagnetic radiation, e.g. emitted light, which is an output of a pixel element of the display device. Layer (6) is transparent in the visible range and reflective or absorbing in the UV range. Liquid crystal layer (7) is arranged such that the color of the emitted light corresponds to the color of the pixel of the liquid crystal layer (7). |
