abstract A keyboard layout for typing in any of the languages whose alphabet is based on Arabic script is designed for typists with any level of familiarity with a Latin alphabet keyboard layout. The keyboard layout reduces the user's learning curve by leveraging the user's familiarity with the Latin alphabet keyboard layout, and the user's knowledge of how alphabet characters of the language are hand-stroked and lexicographically ordered in the Arabic script-based language. For each Latin alphabet letter key, the layout assigns one or more script letters or diacritics based on the phonetic similarity between Latin alphabet characters and alphabet character of the language, sound and shape relationship among the characters, and the frequency distribution analysis of the Arabic script-based alphabet. The language is preferably Arabic, Farsi or Urdu.
