A silica-based nanoformulation and method is used to treat citrus canker, inhibit the growth of mold and mildew, and add nutrients to soil used for agricultural purposes. The nanotechnology-enabled copper-loaded, silica nanoformulation (CuSiNP/NG) design is a "revolutionary re-invention" of Cu for safe applications in a formulation with a maximum abundance of ionic Cu, sustained and optimal Cu ion release for long-term disease protection, better adherence to plant and structural surfaces. The gel-based nanostructure of CuSiNG eliminates multiple spray applications and reduces the amount of Cu used, without compromising antibacterial activity, in comparison to existing Cu compounds. The gel- based nanostructure of Cu loaded silica nanogel (CuSiNG) has improved Cu bioavailability, expansive plant surface coverage and longevity of coverage with the incorporation of silane precursor compounds. The incorporation of ruthenium based fluorescent dyes into CuSiNG provides a means for monitoring adherence properties and detecting when reapplication of CuSiNG is warranted. |
