titleOfInvention Dynamic nuclear polarisation system
abstract A dynamic nuclear polarisation system comprises a superconducting magnet (2) located in a cryogen free cryostat (30) and surrounding a bore (22) defined by a bore tube external to the cryostat. A sample positioning device (11) for insertion into the bore locates a sample at an irradiation position (24) coupled to a microwave source. A source of gaseous cryogen (50) and a conduit system (52), including an adiabatic expansion valve (64) located in the bore, convey gaseous cryogen from the source through the bore and the adiabatic expansion valve to generate liquid cryogen at the irradiation position (24) so as to cool the sample. A cryogen-consumption-free cooling system (32,34,40) mechanically cools the cryostat, and cools the bore tube upstream of the adiabatic expansion valve with respect to the direction of gas supply into the bore tube.
